Nomenclature and Compilation Styles on Local Gazetteers of Villages and Townships in Qing Dynasty

Local gazetteers of villages and townships in Qing Dynasty are not only the sources of historical materials on studying regional culture, but also the important archives of the social memory of grass-roots units. There are distinct characteristics in the nomenclature and the use of compilation styles of the local gazetteers. The five main naming methods as Ji(记), Shi(识), literature(文献), Bian(编) and Lue(略). Their basic characteristics are closely related to the social, political, economic and cultural factors of the Qing Dynasty. The compilation of local gazetteers of villages and townships in Qing Dynasty showed flexible and diverse features. The organic combination of the five genres of map, chronicle, biography, table and chronicle could better highlight the compilation concept and show the value of literature.
